the information management bookstock has now been moved from Ladbroke House library to Holloway Road library, so if students want to browse the shelves they will have to go over there. The short loan stock behind the library counter (and also some reference key texts on the shelves) will remain until nearer the time that the library as a whole moves; and students can continue to reserve stock from other sites to be collected here. You may like to let your students know about this so they don't waste a journey coming here. There is now publicity about the move up in Ladbroke library, and I hope there will soon be information on the website too.

The Librarians' Information Literacy Annual Conference (LILAC) is delighted to announce the call for nominations for our 3 prestigious awards for 2012:

Information Literacy Practitioner of the Year.
This long established award (sponsored by the CILIP CSG IL Group) recognises an outstanding individual contribution to information literacy. The winner will receive £500 for personal use and £500 for their nominated charity. Closing date: February 29th 2012.

Credo Reference Digital Award for Information Literacy.
An exciting new award recognising a digital resource, programme, product or service which has made a significant impact. The winning group or individual will receive £500 for personal use and £500 for their nominated charity. Closing date: February 29th 2012.

Student Award: Sponsored Place at LILAC.
The award (sponsored by the CILIP CSG IL Group) consists of conference registration, travel and accommodation expenses for a student registered on a UK study programme in information / library studies. Closing date: January 31st 2012.

LILAC 2012 will be held in the fabulous city of Glasgow,11th–13th April 2012. The awards will be presented at the conference dinner at the Old Fruit Market on Thursday April 12th.

CILIP CSG Information Literacy Group Student Award

The CSG Annual Conference Student Award is open to full-time or part-time students in the UK registered on a first degree or post-graduate qualification in library studies. It is not essential that applicants are current members of CILIP or the Community Services Group.

The purpose of this award is to enable one student per year to attend the Librarians Information Literacy Annual Conference (LILAC) free of charge. This is the largest and most important conference on Information Literacy in Europe, which attracts an international attendance. The 2011 conference will take place in London on 18-20 April. The award covers conference registration, travel and accommodation expenses.

To apply:

* Applications should take the form of a statement (maximum 500 words) relating to the importance of information literacy and how attendance at LILAC will be of benefit to them in their future career

The Higher Education Academy's Information and Computer Science Subject Centre, is inviting students the chance to submit their opinions and experiences in an essay or podcast/vidcast form. This opportunity is open to anyone studying Computing or Library and Information Science as part of their higher education course. International students studying at a UK institution are more than welcome to enter. However, UK or non-UK students studying at institutions outside of the UK are unfortunately not eligible for the award.

Could I ask if you could distribute this information to your students and encourage them to enter this competition. The competition asks if students can express their views and write a 1,000-word essay or record a five-minute podcast/vidcast on: "'Flexible learning' is a current buzz phrase; how do you envisage the perfect flexible learning course?".

An exhibition at the British Library showcasing new and innovative research tools and techniques

12 October 2010 - 16 July 2011

The Growing Knowledge exhibition will demonstrate the vision for future digital research services at the British Library, and provide a test bed for the evaluation of digital research tools and services that have the potential to support researchers’ needs. The exhibition will consist of a number of features including digital signage, video demonstrations, interactive welcome animations and a prototype “Researcher’s Desktop” application.

We at University College London are evaluating the exhibition, and would like to invite you to visit it and to give us your views. Your visit will allow you to sample each of these components. A researcher will be at the exhibition, and we hope that you will be able to talk to him briefly to tell him what you think of the exhibition.

The programme for each event will be as follows:

been leading a sheltered professional life. This BBC article offers some
food for thought for public libraries, though the statistics quoted
regarding falling patronage in the UK seem to be quite different to
those here*.

The article also mentions the 'Future Libraries Programme' in the UK, an
"ambitious change programme for libraries".

We strongly encourage LIS students from all over the world to apply for the “IFLA Library and Information Science (LIS) Student Paper Award 2010” coordinated by the IFLA Section Education and Training Standing Committee (SET SC), sponsored by "Service for Libraries - ekz" .

The target group is LIS students from all over the world, who are enrolled in a course of study for the “first professional qualification” (e.g. bachelor/graduate diploma/master) in the country of study. All IFLA Sections are requested to open their Call for Papers to students. Accepted student papers will be presented either in the relevant Section’s conference session or, if appropriate, in the SET Open Session.

The award for the first place winner of the IFLA LIS Student Paper Award 2010 includes: Current IFLA Congress registration fee plus grant for economy airfare and economical lodging, up to 2600 €, 1 year’s free IFLA membership, and publication of the paper in the IFLA Journal. Seeking Librarian Volunteers - How Do You Say Reference?

Dear Public, Academic, and Special Librarians:

The International Federation of Library Association (IFLA) is supporting a project entitled "How Do You Say Reference." Designed to recognize library reference and information services worldwide, the project will result in a website featuring profiles of each participating country. Via the website, librarians and library school students will gain exciting insight into the myriad of ways librarians from different parts of the world assist information seekers. We are also interested in the training librarians receive to best meet the needs of patrons, as well as global professional perspectives on how library services can improve.

There are student volunteers to interview librarians around the world about how they assist users in meeting their personal, academic, and professional information needs. With your agreement, a library and information science student will conduct an interview with you by phone. We would simply need to arrange a convenient time for both you and the interviewer. A list of potential questions can also be e-mailed to you prior to the interview taking place in case you would like time to think the questions over and reflect on your own professional experiences.

I am the Project Manager of "How Do You Say Reference," and truly hope you will be able to participate and share your perspective on library information services.

Please see the forthcoming Libraries for Nursing study day advertised on various lists, “Web 2.0: What It Can Do For You”. Although LfN is organising it, by no means is it solely directed at nursing librarians, and we’re encouraging people from other areas to come. I was wondering therefore if you could pass it around the staff and (potentially) students as something that may be of interest. The event is scheduled for the 27^th Nov at the Royal College of Nursing. Information and communication technologies have evolved at an unprecedented pace in the past two decades changing the way people live their lives. While traditional sources of information, such as word of mouth, and early mediated forms of communication such as print, radio, television and telephone retain some importance, they are rapidly being superseded by networked electronic and computerized communications systems, most notably the internet.

Since the mid-1990s, as computerized communications networks have spread beyond specialist user communities such as the academy and military, their applications have also become increasingly diversified.

Technology mergers have created a communications environment in which distinctive media such as print, broadcasting, and telecommunications now operate businesses in direct competition with each other in the same markets. They have also created a world in which information is the primary currency.

With the expansion of the amount of information that is available to people and the growing ease with which it can be accessed, have changes occurred in the way individuals confront and use information? In particular, is there any evidence that the younger generation of today that is accustomed to the ubiquitous availability of a range of communications technologies search for and use information in qualitatively distinctive ways from their elders? If this is the case, to what extent might this generational distinctiveness in orientation towards information have important implications for the future of learning and, more especially, for the role that libraries – those traditional information repositories - might play in educational contexts?

The analysis presented in this report examines developments in information and communication technologies over time before concentrating on the plethora of changes that have occurred in relatively recent times. One crucial development in this context was the dramatic emergence of the internet as a public information tool from the mid-1990s onwards.

There will be a sponsored place at LILAC (Librarians' Information
Literacy Annual Conference) 2009 open to applicants on a librarianship
course in the UK. I wondered if you could circulate this to students at
your institutions and if it might be possible for someone to post it on

library qualifications? The conference is being held at Cardiff
University from the 30th March - 1st April 2009. Conference
