Designed to recognize library reference and information services worldwide, the project will result in a website featuring profiles of each participating country. Via the website, librarians and library school students will gain exciting insight into the myriad of ways librarians from different parts of the world assist information seekers. We are also interested in the training librarians receive to best meet the needs of patrons, as well as global professional perspectives on how library services can improve.

There are student volunteers to interview librarians around the world about how they assist users in meeting their personal, academic, and professional information needs. With your agreement, a library and information science student will conduct an interview with you by phone. We would simply need to arrange a convenient time for both you and the interviewer. A list of potential questions can also be e-mailed to you prior to the interview taking place in case you would like time to think the questions over and reflect on your own professional experiences.

I am the Project Manager of "How Do You Say Reference," and truly hope you will be able to participate and share your perspective on library information services.

If you are interested in being interviewed for this project or have any questions, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at dawnh@eden.rutgers.edu.

Please note: interviews have already been completed or are in the process of being completed with volunteers from Nigeria, Canada, and the UK. We are no longer seeking volunteers from these countries.

Sincerely,

Dawn Hoesterey
IFLA "How Do You Say Reference" Project Manager
dawnh@eden.rutgers.edu

Web 2.0 What it can do for you

Please see the forthcoming Libraries for Nursing study day advertised on various lists, “Web 2.0: What It Can Do For You”. There will be a student rate for this event, which will be £15 to book please follow the same booking procedure on the website.

Paraphrasing and referencing

Paraphrasing and referencing
Summarise the main points of this extract and provide the correct reference (Full report available at: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/infostudies/research/ciber/downloads/GG%20Work%20Package%20V.pdf)

Information and communication technologies have evolved at an unprecedented pace in the past two decades changing the way people live their lives. While traditional sources of information, such as word of mouth, and early mediated forms of communication such as print, radio, television and telephone retain some importance, they are rapidly being superseded by networked electronic and computerized communications systems, most notably the internet.

Since the mid-1990s, as computerized communications networks have spread beyond specialist user communities such as the academy and military, their applications have also become increasingly diversified.

Technology mergers have created a communications environment in which distinctive media such as print, broadcasting, and telecommunications now operate businesses in direct competition with each other in the same markets. They have also created a world in which information is the primary currency.

With the expansion of the amount of information that is available to people and the growing ease with which it can be accessed, have changes occurred in the way individuals confront and use information? In particular, is there any evidence that the younger generation of today that is accustomed to the ubiquitous availability of a range of communications technologies search for and use information in qualitatively distinctive ways from their elders? If this is the case, to what extent might this generational distinctiveness in orientation towards information have important implications for the future of learning and, more especially, for the role that libraries – those traditional information repositories - might play in educational contexts?

The analysis presented in this report examines developments in information and communication technologies over time before concentrating on the plethora of changes that have occurred in relatively recent times. One crucial development in this context was the dramatic emergence of the internet as a public information tool from the mid-1990s onwards.

HEA-ICS Student Competition 2009

The Higher Education Academy subject centre for Information and Computer Sciences is inviting all Computing or Library and Information Science students to express their views in the form of an essay, a podcast or a vidcast on:

"Who or what was the inspiration for choosing your current course of study?"

This opportunity is open to anyone studying Computing or Library and Information Science as part of their higher education course. The programmed text, in effect, implemented on paper the notion of hypertext.

I've occasionally thought of updating it, but not seriously until TiddlyWiki <http://www.tiddlywiki.com/> appeared on the scene. Now, as a result of a couple of days' work in retyping the text of the book, 'An introduction to chain indexing' <http://informationr.net/tdw/publ/chain_indexing/chain_indexing.html> is reborn as a true hypertext.

One of the benefits of using TiddlyWiki for this purpose is that the user can simply download a copy to his or her own hard disc (or portable medium of any kind) and use the text whether connected to the Internet or not, since everything needed to manipulate the text is actually built into the Web page.

I'll be interested to hear from anyone who uses the text or teaches the concept.

Professor T.D. If you have not been to Vilnius, I'd strongly recommend it, it is a very friendly town, worth visiting before it becomes too Westernised..

Susie

Information Seeking in Context, Vilnius, Lithuania 17-20 September, 2008
Call for Papers

We invite the submission of papers in the field of human information behaviour research from participants in previous ISIC Conferences and other researchers from information-related fields for presentation at the Information Seeking in
Context Conference to be held in Vilnius, Lithuania on September 17-20, 2008. Papers should draw upon the theoretical and empirical literature of information behaviour: those that seek to link that literature with related topics such as
information literacy, information retrieval, and information system design should have information seeking or searching at the core of their presentation.

Themes of the conference include the following:

1. Theories and models of information seeking and searching: particular
theoretical frameworks that are currently of interest include (but are not
restricted to) social network theory, actor network theory, cultural-historical
activity theory, genre theory, etc.
2. Research approaches and methodologies, both interpretative and positivist,
employing either qualitative or quantitative methods.
3. Information seeking, searching and use in specific contexts, e.g., health
care, education, business, industry, the public services and government, the
emergency services, etc.
4. Organizational structures and processes and information seeking, searching
and use.
5. Information seeking and searching in the context of the World Wide Web,
including the relationship of information seeking to participation in virtual
social networks.
6. Information behaviour in everyday life; in communities both real and virtual,
including its role in indigenous communities.
7. Integrating studies on information seeking and interactive retrieval.
8. Information use: the nature of information and how information is used to
help solve problems, aid decision making or satisfy an initial need
9. Information seeking and information requirements - integrating information
science and information systems.

Authors should indicate which of these themes their paper addresses. For the 2008 Conference we shall be particularly interested in papers in any of these areas that address the connection between information research and information practice.

Paper preparation and submission deadline February 1, 2008 Please, submit a prepared paper in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .rtf files) to: isic2008@kf.vu.lt

The conference Website at http://www.kf.vu.lt/~isic2008/?page_id=4 is in the course of development.

Useful (and free) referencing resource

http://www.citeulike.org/

CiteULike is a free service to help academics to share, store, and organise the academic papers they are reading. My initial investigation shows that it has many advantages over www.freeonlinesurveys.com.

The main advantage is that surveymonkey has no time limit for keeping responses, and limits the number of responses to 100 pcm. Freeonlinesurvey limits it to 50 responses, 20Q's and 10 days. (above these limits, and you have to pay for the services)

Surveymonkey also has some other features that freeonlinesurvey doesn't appear to have - eg the ability to branch questions eg if person says "no" to question 1, the survey can take them straight to question 5 say. On an intial look, it appears to have more sophisticated data analysis capacities.

Worth having a look.

evaluation criteria for the group presentation

Content
Transparency of research
Contextualisation of research
Knowledge of debate

Effectiveness of communication
Eye contact
Voice projection
Pacing of delivery
Timing
Effective use of slides
Clear design

Group dynamics
Time keeping and allocation of time within the group
Cohesiveness in the delivery of the presentation

Good example no. 2 of the encyclopaedia task

Qualitative research and the current role of information professionals
“Qualitative research...describes research that focuses on how individuals and groups view the world and construct meaning out of their experiences; it is essentially narrative-orientated.” (1) Qualitative research gathers in-depth data in verbal form, from the perspective of those involved, in a natural context. In addition to first-hand observation, interviews and even participation, qualitative data gathering methods include video or tape recording, photography, or studying records kept by participants. The qualitative researcher attempts to refrain from limiting the content of the information gathered, or predicting any findings. In contrast, the quantitative researcher selects the factors thought to be relevant before collecting data in statistical form, while remaining detached from events.

“While the bulk of basic research in library science has taken the form of quantitative research...qualitative research methods have been employed to a greater degree in more recent years.” (2) Although quantitative research is less time-consuming and allows the information professional to obtain a greater breadth of information across a larger population, such as conducting a survey regarding user education, qualitative research lacks predetermined categories, providing richer data, different perspectives, and potentially broader insights, for example interviewing library staff to elicit their view of a specific service. As argued by Kaplan and Maxwell (1994), “ the goal of understanding a phenomenal point of view of the participants and its particular social and institutional context is lost when textual data is quantified.” (3) Considering the complex, social and ever-changing environment of the information world, the value of qualitative methods, ideally alongside quantitative research, is undeniable, especially as pressure grows to meet both staff and user expectations.

(1) Wikipedia. Through qualitative research, researchers are able to focus their “understanding of the research phenomena in situ, that is, within their naturally occurring context(s)” (3) in other words, it enables researchers to gain a deeper understanding of their participants and the sociocultural context in which they live. Qualitative research involves the gathering of subjective data that is not easily translated into numerical form, commonly via the means of interviews, first-hand observation, free-flowing discussion and artifact analysis. As a result, it is usually restricted to a smaller sample group but offers an in-depth analysis of each case. In contrast, quantitative research covers a wide sample group but is viewed as more deductive in nature since it is based on the numerical collection and examination of data such as surveys and questionnaires.

Due to the dynamic social climate of the information world, there is a general shift towards qualitative research in the study of information science. According to Wilson, qualitative research appears to be tailored towards the study of information-seeking needs as it enables the information professional to cultivate “a better understanding of the user, be better able to design more effective information services, and be better able to create useful theory of information-seeking behaviour and information use.” (4) By harnessing the benefits of both qualitative and quantitative research, the information professional will be able to to develop greater sensitivity to the user's needs and meet their demands more effectively.

(1) Wikepedia.
